I booked through Asiatravel a standard room that did not allow non-smoking specification. Upon our arrival, when I requested a non-smoking room, they upgraded our room at no extra charge to non-smoking one on a higher floor with a balcony and partial view of the Tiananmen rostrum and the Great Hall of the People. We appreciated that very much. The hotel location is the best, in my opinion for people wanting to be right downtown near the Forbidden City, Wanfujing, etc. The bathroom was small and had marble walls, but grouting was poorly done, so it did not look very nice. The Beijing Hotel building A is 5-star by Chinese standards but not by Western standards, but we knew that beforehand, and we feel that the price we paid was appropriate, considering the outstanding location. The swimming pool and fitness center are great and are shared between the regular Beijing Hotel guests and guests of the high-end division of the hotel called Raffles Beijing Hotel.
